Qualifying Examination

All students must pass the qualifying examination in order to become candidates for the Ph.D. degree in integrative neuroscience. These examinations take place early in the fall term of the student`s second and/or third year in the program, typically during the second or third week of September.

The examination is administered by a committee composed of six faculty members of the graduate program in integrative neuroscience. Three of those faculty members are drawn from Rutgers and three from UMDNJ. Faculty members serving on the qualifying examination committee are appointed to three-year terms by the director(s) of the graduate program. The director(s) also name a chairperson and vice chairperson of the committee. The chairperson serves a two-year term as chairperson and then rotates off the committee. At that point, the vice chairperson moves up to become chairperson, and a new vice chairperson is appointed.
