Scholarly Writing for the Professional Nurse (2)
This course focuses on skills and
concepts of scholarly writing for the professional nurse to develop critical
thinking and writing style using stages of the writing process. Students will
learn to identify, appraise, summarize and synthesize relevant sources using
American Psychological Association (APA) format. They will demonstrate how to
use library research, internet search engines, scholarly journals, and other
relevant resources to write a scholarly paper.

Introduction to Quality & Safety in Healthcare (3)
This course focuses on the
introduction of various principles, theories, and models of quality, safety and
processes improvement for nurses. Students will identify practices and
processes that promote quality and safety to reduce risk of harm and improve
outcomes. The student will describe nursing's influence on patient safety and
health care outcomes and their impact on organizational performance inclusive
of quality improvement strategies. Students will examine gaps in quality and
safety measurement and identify areas for potential research and/or education.

Health Assessment and Clinical Reasoning (3)
This course focuses on nursing assessment skills, clinical reasoning and
judgement as applied to individuals and families across the lifespan. Students
will use critical thinking to recognize and identify actual and potential
health problems from clinical data, health history and physical assessment.
Students will apply the nursing process to guide clinical decision making and
nursing interventions to promote safe health outcomes. Opportunities to apply
learned concepts to patient care activities will be facilitated using
case-based learning and simulated clinical activities.

Integration of Pathophysiology & Pharmacotherapeutics for Clinical Nursing (4)
This course builds upon the knowledge and skills of the practicing nurse
to apply and integrate pathophysiological and pharmacological concepts to
clients in clinical settings. Content focuses on the pathophysiology of acute
and chronic diseases and pharmacological interventions for disease prevention
and treatment across the lifespan. Underlying pathophysiologic processes,
disease manifestation, risk factors, and therapeutic nursing interventions to
improve diverse client outcomes are explored. A wide spectrum of pharmacologic
agents with an emphasis on the nurse's role in safe and therapeutic medication
administration are examined in the context of cultural, ethical, and legal
influence of medication access and adherence.

Community Health and Public Health Nursing (3)
Provides R.N. students with an introduction to
community health nursing practice, including the standards of practice for
community health nursing, with an emphasis on community assessment, prevention,
program planning and evaluation, community empowerment, and caring for
high-risk aggregates and vulnerable populations. Students will learn the
theoretical basis underlying analysis of health patterns of communities and
develop an understanding of the role of the professional nurse in promoting the
health of communities.

RN-BS Practicum (3)
Contact Hours: 45 practicum hours
This course builds on previous nursing knowledge, skills, and
experiences to explore leadership and professional role development in the
community setting. Evidence-based theories and clinical judgement models will
be applied to recognize and analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate
solutions, act, and evaluate outcomes. Students will be responsible for
completing the necessary practicum hours during the semester under the direct
supervision of a community partner and nursing faculty. Students will examine
professional nursing roles, participate in interdisciplinary activities, and
plan and implement a health promotion project in collaboration with a community
partner.
