A major in medical technology consists of a total of 86 to 90 credits, distributed as follows:
1. English composition (3 credits)
2. Biological sciences (24-25 credits): General Biology 01:119:115,116, and 117; Genetics 01:447:380; General Microbiology 01:447:390 (or 11:680:390); Immunology 01:146:474; and Systems Physiology 01:146:356 (or 11:067:300)*
3. Mathematics (7-8 credits): Minimum requirements are 01:640:115 and 135, or equivalent. Please note: a course in computing or statistics may be used as a substitute for 01:640:135 with prior approval. A two-semester calculus sequence will meet the mathematics requirement.
4. Chemistry (20-22 credits): General Chemistry with lab 01:160:161-162, 171, and Analytical Chemistry 251; plus either Sequence 1: Organic Chemistry with lab 01:160:307-308 and 311; or, with prior approval, Sequence 2: Elementary Organic Chemistry with lab 01:160:209, 211 and Introduction to Biochemistry with lab 01:694:301, 313.
5. 01:660:485-486 Clinical Practicum in Medical Technology (16,16)
*A minimum of 10 credits of coursework in the biological sciences (section 2 above) must be completed in residence. In other words, no more than 12 credits in this part of the major requirements may be transferred from any institution outside of Rutgers University–New Brunswick. This rule is intended to assure that students receiving degrees from Rutgers-New Brunswick have taken a minimum number of courses in their major with this faculty. Please keep in mind that although a course may transfer from another institution into one of the Rutgers-New Brunswick schools, it will not necessarily be accepted toward the major in medical technology. Therefore, all transfer courses must be evaluated and accepted by the advising office of the Office of Undergraduate Instruction in order to count toward the major. As indicated earlier, students must complete both semesters of general biology at the same institution or on the same campus of Rutgers before becoming eligible to declare the medical technology major.
