Regional Option
Majors in the regional option will demonstrate familiarity
with a cross-section of the classical literatures of Africa, the Middle East,
and South Asia and critical understanding of the modern literatures of one of
the three regions. They will be able to identify and explain the major
historical, theoretical, and methodological issues related to the study and
analysis of the modern literatures of Africa, or the Middle East, or South
Asia. Majors will also develop listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills
in one of the languages of their chosen region of study (Africa/the Middle
East/South Asia) at a proficiency level of intermediate-mid or higher, based on
the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages
(ACTFL). They will demonstrate the ability to employ these communicative skills
in culturally relevant contexts.
Comparative Option
Majors in the comparative option will demonstrate familiarity
with a cross-section of the classical literatures of Africa, the Middle East,
and South Asia and critical comparative understanding of the modern
literatures of the three regions and their interrelationships. They will be
able to identify and explain the major historical, theoretical, and
methodological issues related to the comparative study and analysis of the
modern literatures of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Majors will also
demonstrate listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills in at least two
languages from different regions (Africa/the Middle East/South Asia) at a
proficiency level of intermediate-mid or higher in at least two languages,
based on the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign
Languages (ACTFL). They will also have the ability to employ these
communicative skills in culturally relevant contexts.
