Student Responsibility to Keep Informed
The Department of Theater Arts makes special demands on students
enrolled in the master of fine arts (M.F.A.) and bachelor of fine arts
(B.F.A.) training programs because of the professional nature of the
programs and the demands of the profession. Specific rules and policies
are published in the Guide for Actors
and the Guide for Design and Production Students in the theater arts department. Students are responsible for understanding and following
all rules and policies set forth in these documents, as well as those
in the online graduate or online undergraduate university catalog.
Attendance in M.F.A. and B.F.A. Conservatory Classes
Absence
from any class is problematic. In the event that an absence is
unavoidable, it is the student's responsibility to discuss the absence
with the instructor to determine whether the absence is excusable. One
unexcused absence from class can lower the student's final grade; two
unexcused absences may result in failure. In the B.F.A. Acting Program,
no unexcused absences are permitted in any class. Three late arrivals
are equal to one unexcused absence. Students are responsible for making
up any missed work and being properly prepared for the next class.
The
attendance policy for the design and technology program is that two
unexcused absences from any class will result in failure of that
class. Recognized religious holidays will be accepted with advance
notice. In case of illness, students will be asked to provide a
doctor's note supporting the absence. One unexcused absence will result
in a drop of one full grade from the class at the very least. Three
late arrivals of 10 minutes or longer will add up to one unexcused
absence, and late arrivals of lesser amounts will erode a student's
grade to some degree.
A student having excessive absences for
medical reasons may be unable to maintain the level of work required to
complete the program. More than four absences due to illness, even
though excused, may result in a requirement to withdraw and retake the
class. Extensive absence due to illness will be discussed with the
department chair and the Mason Gross School of the Arts dean of students to
determine the most suitable course of action.
Program and Class Fees
Students
in acting and design are assessed professional program fees that
support professional training and career transition. Some courses
charge specific fees for tickets, models, or supplies. Should a student
leave or be dismissed from the program, all fees are nonrefundable.
Repeated Courses
Theater
arts B.F.A. students may repeat a liberal arts course taken at Rutgers
in accordance with the regulation stated in the Academic Policies and Procedures chapter of the Mason Gross School of the Arts section of
this catalog.
Bachelor of Arts
The
theater arts department also offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) major and
minor in theater arts to liberal arts students enrolled in the School
of Arts and Sciences. See Theater Arts in the Programs of Study for
