The graduate program in linguistics offers a comprehensive program
of study leading to the Ph.D. in the major areas of theoretical
linguistics. It is structured to facilitate the student's involvement
in research through work undertaken in close contact with members of
the faculty. The program is designed to prepare graduates for careers
in research and teaching at the university level in linguistics or in
linguistically oriented subfields within the larger enterprise of
cognitive science. Before specializing, students are expected to
develop broad expertise in all of the core areas of phonology, syntax,
and semantics.
The Certificate in Language Learning and Teaching requires two
semesters of teaching in a language department or writing program, one
course in the methodology of language teaching, and two other courses
on issues related to language learning and teaching. Students in
the Ph.D. program in linguistics are eligible to pursue this
certificate.
