The Teacher in Film: An Online Exploration (3)
This course focuses on films in which a teacher is the central character. Students will study these films as a cinematic art form, as positive inspirational role models for teachers, and as unrealistic examples that shape the public's view concerning teaching. Within the course, students will not view these films one by one (although they may if they choose), but rather view carefully selected illustrative segments from five or more films, each introduced and summarized with instructor-prepared commentary. The focus of these segments may portray a universal situation, a conflict, or a character type, for example, all of which appear again and again in the genre of teacher film. Segments come from such films as Goodbye Mr. Chips, Dead Poet's Society, Dangerous Minds, The Emperor's Club, School of Rock, Stand and Deliver, Up the Down Staircase, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, To Sir with Love, and Blackboard Jungle. Students will view these segments, complete online assignments, participate in online chats, analyze and critique a film that is not among the 10 films viewed, and complete a final course paper. There are no face-to-face class meetings.

Visual Art: Studio and Theory (3)
Through personal studio experience and theoretical readings, a treatment of visual art making through two modes; response to perceived physical fields and response to one's internal, subjective fields; includes consideration of educational applications.
No prior visual art experience necessary.

The Teacher as Performer (3)
Participation/lecture course on the theories of acting, directing, and design as they apply to the teacher in the classroom. The performance aspects of teaching as one model for classroom pedagogy forms the basis for the in-depth class exploration. Such issues as spatial relationship of teacher and student, vocal production by the teacher, teaching in role, and use of lighting and properties considered and rehearsed.

Practicum in Creative Arts Education (BA)
Fieldwork with individuals and/or groups in the area of creative arts education, exploring and testing the use of arts processes and disciplines as catalysts to teaching content, or as distinct educational and aesthetic experiences in and of themselves; particular field projects are set up in one's own school, in cooperating schools by arrangement, and in various other educational and cultural centers.
