Brian C. Chu

Ph.D., Temple

Brian C. Chu's areas of interest include the assessment and treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders in youth, with a special emphasis on the dissemination of evidence-based practice, effectiveness research, and the evaluation of within-session client and therapist process variables that predict therapy outcome. He has a developing interest in understanding multicultural issues that impact help-seeking behavior and access to mental health services. He is also director and founder of the Youth Anxiety and Depression Clinic, a university-based research clinic that provides evidence-based assessment and treatment for children and adolescents. His classes include: Applications of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression (18:821:555) and Clinical Research and Treatment for Youth Anxiety and Depression (18:821:556). In addition to writing journal articles and book chapters on the above topics, he has coauthored several treatment manuals, the SKILLS Behavioral Activation Program for Anxious and Depressed Youth; Cognitive-Behavioral Family Therapy for Anxious Children (2nd Ed.); and Behavioral Activation and Social Exposure (BASE) Group Treatment for Schizophrenia and other Serious Mental Illness. Dr. Chu applies the scientist-practitioner model throughout his research, his supervisory work with graduate students, and the courses he teaches in child psychopathology and cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety and depression. He is an active member of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy, former president for the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Special Interest Group, and the coeditor of the SIG newsletter.
