New Brunswick Undergraduate Catalog 2013–2015 School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Programs of Study Chemistry 160 Graduation Requirements for the Major

Graduation Requirements for the Major

A.  Major Requirements (minimum of 65-67 credits)

The major in chemistry is offered by the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS). Its core option (Option A) involves 65-67 credits of courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics.  Additional coursework is required in other options: general ACS option (B); chemical biology option (C); environmental option (D); business/law option (E); and chemical physics option (F).  A minimum grade-point average of 2.0 in all chemistry courses is required for graduation. Please refer to the SAS section of the catalog for Chemistry for a full description of the requirements of the major.

B.  Additional SEBS Core Requirements for Students Majoring in Chemistry (37 credits)

I. School Mission:  Interdisciplinary Critical Analysis (3 credits)

One 3-credit Junior/Senior Colloquium (See the Degree Requirements chapter for a description of this requirement.) Note: Some Junior/Senior Colloquia also fulfill the Professional Ethics requirement (see Area VIII below).

II. Introductory Life and Physical Sciences (4 credits)

A. Life Sciences: 01:119:103 Principles of Biology (4) or equivalent

B. Physical Sciences: This SEBS requirement is automatically fulfilled by the introductory chemistry requirements of the major.

III. Humanities and the Arts (6 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter.

IV. Multicultural and International Studies (6 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter.

V. Human Behavior, Economic Systems, and Political Processes (9 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter.

VI. Oral and Written Communication (6 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter. 01:355:302     Scientific and Technical Writing (3) is strongly recommended.

VII. Experience-Based Education (3 credits)

01:160:495-496  Senior Research Project (1-6,1-6) or 11:115:493,494 Research Problems in Biochemistry (1-6,1-6) or 11:400:493,494 Research Problems in Food Science (1-4,1-4) or equivalent independent laboratory research project or appropriate, adviser-approved placement in cooperative education.

VIII. Professional Ethics in Chemistry (no additional credits)

Issues in professional and scientific ethics are included in 01:160:491-492 Seminar in Chemistry, which is included in Section A above(Requirements of the Major).

C. SEBS Minor or Certificate Program (minimum of 18 additional credits )

All SEBS students majoring in chemistry must complete either a SEBS minor or a certificate program offered by SEBS(18 or more additional credits, depending on the student's choice of program). Students should review the available minors and certificate programs as soon as possible after entering SEBS, since the requirements of the minor could affect the student's selection of courses fulfilling some of the SEBS core requirements (such as items B.II and B.V. above).

Students are urged to consult with their academic adviser or with one of the assistant deans in the SEBS Office of Academic Programs and Research (Martin Hall, second floor) regarding their choice of minor or certificate program.

D.  Unspecified Electives (0-8 credits)

In addition to courses meeting the above requirements, students can take any other courses offered by the university, for which they meet the course eligibility requirements, to bring their total number of credits to the minimum of 128 required for graduation. Depending on the minor chosen, the total requirements of the major, the SEBS core and the SEBS minor or certificate program may exceed 128 credits.
