Master of Communication and Information Studies (M.C.I.S.) Fellows

Johnson and Johnson Fellows (who are funded through the Johnson & Johnson Fellowship Program) will take 3 credits of internship each semester of their fellowship and these count toward the elective requirements. Otherwise, fellow requirements are the same as all other M.C.I.S. students.

These students are selected by Johnson and Johnson (J&J) to be fellows and spend about 20 hours per week at J&J. (While these on-site experiences do not constitute employment with the sponsor, international fellows on F-1 visas are nonetheless recommended to restrict their time on site to 20 hours per week.) Fellows receive a stipend plus tuition and gain valuable experience. All M.C.I.S. applicants are considered for J&J fellowships as part of our admissions process. Nominated students are asked to supply a professional résumé for further consideration. Typical fellow placements are for three semesters. Students may apply and be considered for fellowships in subsequent semesters after they begin the M.C.I.S. program.

  • MCIS Fellow Internship I,II,III (17:194:520,521,522) is required of students awarded M.C.I.S. fellowships each semester of their fellowship for up to three semesters or 9 credits.

To apply to be a Johnson and Johnson Fellow after initially joining the M.C.I.S. program:

  • Send a professional resume to the M.C.I.S. director
  • Send an email stating your interest in being considered for a fellowship

Belgium CSR Fellows  The Belgium CSR Fellowship involves a yearlong Practicum in Corporate Social Responsibility from roughly July 1 to May 31. The M.C.I.S. program of Rutgers University awards the Certificate in Corporate Social Responsibility upon successful completion of the practicum.

The practicum involves a one-year residency with the first month devoted to training in the Department of Corporate Contributions at Johnson & Johnson Corporate Offices in New Brunswick, New Jersey. A nine-month field placement at Johnson & Johnson's Belgium Office of Corporate Contributions located in Brussels follows immediately after the training period.

To apply to be a Belgium CSR Fellow

  • Contact the M.C.I.S. director for information of available fellowships
  • Candidates who have taken the CSR course (either as 510 or as an elective) will receive much stronger consideration

M.C.I.S. Research Associate

Research Associates are selected in their first semester of study and have somewhat different requirements (6 credit core; 3 credit pick-set; 3 credits of practicum; 3 credits of teaching internship; 18 credits of electives; 3 credit capstone). These students apply in the first semester of study to be involved in more intensive research-focused training. In addition to coursework, they will be involved in empirical research with a faculty member; assist in teaching a research methods course; and focus their study and capstone project with a research orientation. Students who are aiming toward doctoral-level study or a research career may wish to consider applying to be a Research Associate. There is no funding associated with this opportunity.

To apply to be a Research Associate in your first semester in the program:

  • Find a member of the SCILS graduate faculty to serve as an adviser and mentor
  • Write a personal statement addressed to the M.C.I.S. director specifying why you want to be a research associate and your goals if selected for this special opportunity
