The master of communication and information studies (M.C.I.S.) program requires the successful completion of a minimum of 36 credits. This includes completion of a four-course core (12 credits); one course (3 credits) out of a four-course pick-set; at least six elective courses (18 credits); one capstone seminar (3 credits); and participation in one M.C.I.S. colloquium for each course taken each semester (0 credits).
The degree typically requires three semesters of full-time study: 12 credits per semester is the maximum course load. Study is frequently pursued on a part-time basis. Although all core courses and many elective courses are scheduled during the evening hours, some electives are only offered during the afternoon.
Up to 6 credits may be applied from another program outside of the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies (SCILS). Students may transfer up to 6 credits of graduate coursework toward the degree if credits were earned within the past three years, if the coursework translates directly to the student's development and preparation in the M.C.I.S. program, and only if the student achieved a grade of A in this coursework.
In all cases, however, each degree student must earn 30 credits within the program.
There are no language or mathematics requirements for this degree.
Transfer of Credit from Another Graduate Program
To transfer course credits to the program from another university or from another Rutgers graduate program, you must:
- Provide the director with a copy of the course syllabus (from the instructor and semester you took the course)
- Have taken the course within three years of entry into the M.C.I.S.program
- Have earned an A grade in the course
- Have the course approved by the M.C.I.S. program director as an elective for the M.C.I.S. program
- Have a copy of that approval filed in your M.C.I.S. student file (a copy of an email approval is the usual procedure)
- Have a signed, completed form for transfer of credit on file
