Electives (18 credits)

Students are required to complete 18 credits in electives. Electives may be satisfied through elective courses, internships, practicum, and courses outside of the master of communication and information studies (M.C.I.S.) program (as long as the number of transferred coursework and outside electives does not equal more than 6 credits). Substantive courses are offered through areas of study linked to each department in the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies:

  • Communication Studies (17:194:540-17:194:579)
  • Knowledge Management (17:194:580-17:194:589)
  • Media Studies (17:194:590-17:194:599)

Students admitted who lack relevant work experience are strongly encouraged to take a 3-credit internship:

  • Elective Internship I,II (17:194:525,526) or Intensive Internship (17:194:527) in an outside organization
  • M.C.I.S. Teaching Internship I,II (17:194:523,524) to gain pedagogy experience in a classroom setting
  • M.C.I.S. Practicum to gain hands-on research experience with faculty

Students are restricted to 6 credits of internship in fulfilling their elective course requirements. M.C.I.S. Fellows may apply 9 credits of internship in fulfilling their elective course requirements.
