Writing across the Curriculum

Students are required to complete two courses at Rutgers University-Newark designated as writing intensive, including at least one in the department of the major course of study.  Students may choose to take the other as a course that satisfies core curriculum or as an elective. All departments offer at least one writing-intensive course, identified in the Schedule of Classes with a Q in the section number.

The Writing across the Curriculum requirement reinforces writing skills attained in composition courses and are typically upper level. Each writing-intensive course requires students to undertake substantive writing assignments that are evaluated not only on content but also on issues of grammar, organization, and rhetoric. Writing-intensive courses emphasize drafting, revision, and critical feedback.

For further information about the Writing across the Curriculum requirement and a current listing of courses, see https://sasn.rutgers.edu/academics-admissions/academic-departments/writing-program/writing-across-curriculum.
