University College-Newark's learning objectives require that students be able to think quantitatively. All students must therefore demonstrate competency in quantitative reasoning by completing at least 3 credits in one of the following courses with a grade of C or better:
- Math 106, Mathematics for Liberal Arts
- Math 107, College Algebra for the Humanities
- Math 108, College Algebra for Business
- Math 109, College Algebra for the Physical Sciences
- Math 114, Precalculus
- Math 119, Basic Calculus
- Math 135, Calculus
- Any higher-level mathematics course offered by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
All incoming freshmen take a placement test to determine their eligibility to enroll in mathematics classes. Those who do not place into any of these classes will be enrolled in the appropriate class to prepare them to complete one of the required courses.
All incoming students must take a mathematics course each semester until the quantitative reasoning requirement is met. Mathematics courses must be taken sequentially. Once any math course is successfully completed with a grade of C or better, a student cannot repeat the same course or take a lower-level math course for degree credit.
