A total of 53 credits is required for the mathematics major. The following are required courses:

  21:640:135  Calculus I (4) or 21:640:155  Honors Calculus I (4)

  21:640:136  Calculus II (4) or 21:640:156  Honors Calculus II (4)

  21:640:235  Calculus III (4)

  21:640:238  Foundations of Modern Mathematics (3)

  21:640:311  Advanced Calculus I (3)

  21:640:312  Advanced Calculus II (3)

  21:640:314  Elementary Differential Equations (3)

  21:640:350  Linear Algebra (3)

  21:640:491 or 492  Mathematics Seminar (3,3)

In addition, 12 elective credits are required in mathematics courses at the 300 or 400 level.  21:730:432 is also a valid elective for the mathematics major.  Six of these credits must consist of proof-based courses such as:

21:640:403,432,435,436,441,442,451,452,456 or 21:730:432

The required courses 21:640:238 and 21:640:491/492 are writing intensive, and together satisfy the writing requirement for mathematics majors.  

Here is a prerequisite flow chart for required courses in the mathematics major.  Mathematics majors should take 21:640:238 immediately after completing 21:640:136/156.
