The major requires 36 credits of history courses with a grade of C or higher. These courses may include offerings at Rutgers University–Newark (510 and 512 prefixes) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) (HISTprefix). Each program is subject to approval by an adviser or by the chair of the department. Specific requirements are as follows:
1. 6 credits in History of Western Civilization I and II (21:510:201,202). NJIT and transfer students may substitute two semesters of introductory world civilization courses.
2. 6 credits in United States history courses (any level)
3. 6 credits in Asian, African, Latin American, or comparative history courses (any level)
4. 3 credits in Perspectives in History (21:510:315 or 21:510:316)
5. the 3-credit Seminar-Readings (21:510:489)
6. the 3-credit Seminar-Research (21:510:490)
7. 9 additional credits in history, at least 6 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level
