Major and Minor Requirements


The Department of African American and African Studies at Rutgers University–Newark offers an interdisciplinary major and minor that focuses on the historical, socioeconomic, and cultural experiences of African Americans and African people in the worldwide diaspora. Courses also are designed to integrate scholarship on gender, race, and class.

Major Requirements

Thirty-six (36) credits of courses with a grade of C or better are required for a major in the discipline.

The following courses are required (21 credits):

   21:014:111,112  Introduction to African-American and African Studies (3,3)

   21:014:305  Black Women in the United States (3)

   21:014:306  Comparative Race Relations: South Africa and the United States (3)

   21:014:***    Literature of Africa and/or the Caribbean (3)
***The following courses are examples of what will fulfill this requirement: 014:304, 358, 370; 350:256, 356; 352:395, 396

   21:014:396  The African-American Community (3)

   21:014:412  Senior Seminar (3)

Fifteen (15) additional credits in electives are required for completion of the major.*


Minor Requirements

Eighteen (18) credits of courses with a grade of C or better are required for a minor in the discipline.

The following courses are required:

 21:014:111,112  Introduction to African-American and African Studies (3,3)

Twelve (12) credits in electives.*

*Related courses offered by other departments may be applied toward the major and minor, with departmental approval.
