Puerto Rican Studies program
Conklin Hall (973/353-5594)
The Puerto Rican studies major and minor are offered at NCAS.
The Puerto Rican studies program at NCAS offers an interdisciplinary
and cross-cultural major and minor in order to provide an opportunity
for Rutgers students to understand the Puerto Rican community of New
Jersey, the United States, and Puerto Rico. To achieve this goal, the
courses adopt a comparative approach, making sure to place discussion
of Puerto Rican topics in the broader context of the Caribbean and
Latin America, and in terms of the complex relationship that has
existed since 1898 between Puerto Rico and the United States. Except
for the two literature courses, which are offered in Spanish, all other
courses are taught in English. Students with interests in the fields of
law, medicine, social work, and criminal justice, among others, or in
careers in the public sector find many courses very useful.
