The Newark campus
of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, offers students the
advantages of an affordable, personalized education at a moderately
sized campus, combined with the superior classroom, library, and
laboratory facilities of a major research university. Located near the
heart of the state's largest city, within the nation's liveliest
metropolitan area, Rutgers-Newark upholds the dual mission of academic
excellence with access.
The
campus's greatest resource in fulfilling its mission is a faculty of
nearly 500 distinguished scholars and educators, whose scholarly
research enriches the classroom experience. Students have the
opportunity to work individually with faculty members, of whom 99
percent hold doctoral degrees and who are recruited for both their
scholarly abilities and for their commitment to teaching.
Newark College of Arts and Sciences and University College-Newark
The Rutgers-Newark
campus has two undergraduate liberal arts colleges: Newark College of
Arts and Sciences (NCAS), with a student enrollment of 4,300 and home
to the Honors College, and University College-Newark (UC-N), which
enrolls 1,700 students. Together, they offer majors in more than 45
fields of study.
NCAS serves the traditional college student
who attends classes during the day, while UC-N is geared toward adult
students who work during the day and who attend college part time,
evenings or on weekends. Both NCAS and UC-N offer the best of the
undergraduate liberal arts tradition and provide excellence in
preprofessional studies in such areas as medicine, law, business, and
other disciplines. Rutgers-Newark is able to offer students the
benefits of small classes and the opportunity to work with faculty
members on an individual basis.
College of Nursing
The
College of Nursing educates women and men for entry into the profession
of nursing at the baccalaureate degree level. The college also provides
education for the registered nurse and second degree student seeking a
baccalaureate degree in nursing. The nursing program is offered in
Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, and Freehold (at the Western Monmouth
Higher Education Center) with a curriculum that includes liberal arts,
sciences, and the humanities, and the nursing major, which focuses on
optimization of health through health promotion, risk reduction,
illness and symptom management, and leadership and management skills
within the profession. The curriculum is designed to promote
intellectual curiosity, human compassion, and dedication to nursing
practice. Students' clinical experiences are supervised by faculty and
integrated with course work.
As the largest provider of
professional nurses in the state of New Jersey, Rutgers has a
distinguished record of education since 1942.

10,500. It is located on 37 acres in the center of the educational,
medical, and cultural district known as University Heights.

New Jersey, Essex County College, and Seton Hall Law School--provide a
wide range of higher education opportunities to a student population of
almost 40,000, making Newark a true college town.

dyslexia, and schizophrenia. The Joseph C. Cornwall Center for
Metropolitan Studies, the new Graduate Division of Global Affairs, and
the Center for Information Management, Integration, and Connectivity,
are located at the university as well.
On campus, theater
performances, lectures, concerts, films, and exhibits provide a
vibrant cultural environment. A wide range of athletic and
recreational facilities is available in the Golden Dome Athletic
Center, including a swimming pool, racquetball courts, two gymnasiums,
and workout rooms equipped with aerobic and Nautilus machines, and free
weights.
The campus is computer-linked through a fiber optic cable, and residence
halls are wired to accept personal computers. Computer labs are equipped
with a full complement of sophisticated software and learning tools
and are accessible throughout the campus. Wireless technology is also
available in many buildings and classrooms. The John Cotton Dana

institutions.

Arts Center complex, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Newark Symphony
Hall, and Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art. The city's
central business district has been transformed by new glass, brick, and
steel office buildings and landscaped plazas. A sports-minded student
can catch an Atlantic League minor league baseball game at the Bears
and Eagles Stadium, or enjoy one the city's many public parks. Nearby
neighborhoods include the Ironbound, home to the largest Portuguese
community in the United States, with its abundance of restaurants and small
businesses.
The
city's central business district, a rich source of internships and job
opportunities, is home to major corporations such as IDT, Verizon,
Prudential, PSE&G, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey,
MBNA, and many others, as well as the law firms and governmental
offices that make Newark the state's legal center. Newark's superb
public transportation system links Newark to Manhattan and all it has
to offer, as well as to other major cities, while major highways all
lead to Newark. Nearby Newark Liberty International Airport is among
the nation's fastest-growing airports.
