Major Requirements


Instrumental Performance Concentration

Students in the instrumental performance concentration must take the following courses in music theory (25 credits):

  •   07:700:123-124  Aural Skills I,II (2,2) or 07:700:153-154 Advanced Aural Skills I,II (2,2)
  •   07:700:127  Introduction to Music Technology (1)

Performance students must also take the following courses in music history (12 credits):
  •   07:700:301-302  Music History I,II (3,3)
  •   07:700:303  Principles of Ethnomusicology (3)
  •   07:700:419 or 420  Special Studies in Music History (3)

In addition to the requirements above, students in the instrumental performance concentration must pass the piano proficiency exam and also complete the following course of study (50 credits):

  •   07:701:407,408  20th- and 21st-Century Performance Seminar (1,1)
  •   chamber music courses (4)*
  •   large ensemble courses (8)*
  •   pedagogy courses (2)
  •   applied major lessons (24)

Music electives (7) To fulfill the 7 credits of music electives, courses may be selected from any 300- or 400-level music courses not being counted toward the music major requirements, or 200-level music courses pending approval of the coordinator of undergraduate studies. Students may use Classroom Piano to satisfy 4 of the 7 music elective credits.

Free electives (3) To fulfill the 3 credits of free electives, courses may be selected from any music course or any nonmusic courses.

Students in the instrumental performance concentration must complete a minimum of 33 credits in liberal arts courses (see Degree Requirements), for a total of 120 credits required for graduation. All performance students present a recital in the senior year in partial fulfillment of their requirements for graduation. Acceptability of this recital is determined by a faculty jury in attendance.

*Bachelor of music students must enroll in a large ensemble in every semester of enrollment with the exception of music education majors in the semester in which they are enrolled in Clinical Practice II and composition majors after they have completed the required 6 semesters of large ensemble. The music department will assign all students to the ensemble of its choice.

Vocal Performance Concentration

Students in the vocal performance concentration must take the following courses in music theory (25 credits):

All performance students present a recital in their senior year in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation. Acceptability of this recital is determined by a faculty jury in attendance.


+Diction for Singers satisfies 2 credits of the chamber music requirement.

The music department will assign all students to the ensemble of its choice.

Music Education Concentration

Students in the music education concentration take the following courses in music theory (26 credits):

  •   music education courses (35 instrumental) (33 vocal/general)
  •   performance study courses (15)

There are two streams that music education majors may follow: vocal/general concentration, which requires 121 credits for graduation, and instrumental concentration, which requires a total of 123 credits for graduation. All music education students must present a 30-minute recital in the senior year in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation. The total number of requirements for each music education concentration includes 30 credits in liberal arts courses. The music education degree program is specifically designed so that students acquire course credits necessary to both graduate with a degree from Rutgers AND meet the teacher certification requirements for the state of New Jersey. Prior to acceptance into the Music Education Professional Sequence, students must either demonstrate adequate SAT/ACT scores or pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Combined Exam (code:5751). In order to be certified as a licensed New Jersey educator, students must also complete and pass a series of exams as required by the state of New Jersey.

+These 3 credits are included in the 30 liberal arts credits.

Jazz Studies Concentration

Students concentrating in jazz studies must pass the piano proficiency exam and the following course of study (89 credits):

All composition majors must complete an annual portfolio review with the composition faculty and present a recital in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation.
