The bachelor of music (B.M.) program offers four areas of concentration: performance, jazz studies, composition, and music education. Students are admitted specifically to one of these four areas. Any change in concentration must be made with the approval of the department. All students in the bachelor of music program must take a piano proficiency examination by the end of the second year of study and pass it in order to graduate. Students in the music education concentration are required to pass the piano proficiency examination by the end of the second year of study as part of the application process for acceptance into the Music Education Professional Sequence.

The course (07:701:100) Music Assembly must be successfully completed in each semester of full-time enrollment with the exception of the semester in which music education majors are enrolled in Clinical Practice II (full-time student teaching). Students who earn an unsatisfactory grade in Music Assembly in any semester will not be allowed to schedule a senior recital or register for Clinical Practice II. All bachelor of music students are also required to perform in Music Assembly in each semester of study.

Students in the music education concentration must complete all degree requirements before the Clinical Practice II semester. In addition, students may not be registered for any other courses during the semester in which they participate in Clinical Practice II unless preapproved by the coordinator of field placements.
