The Rutgers Filmmaking Center offers a filmmaking degree to students in an innovative program with individualized training in fiction, experimental, and documentary film production taught by a faculty of professional filmmakers with a track record of producing award-winning films.

The Rutgers Filmmaking Center offers comprehensive technical and artistic training in a supportive environment, all within a firm grounding in the humanities. Students collaborate, take risks, and build upon a solid foundation to create original films. This program exposes students to a broad range of cinematic traditions and a wide array of concepts and approaches, so they can become informed filmmakers who can integrate theory with practice.

Students receive hands-on training in directing, cinematography, screenwriting, producing, field production, animation, editing, and postproduction technique while delving into filmmaking history, theory, and criticism. Blended with a wide array of liberal arts electives, students learn to be technically astute filmmakers who understand the fundamental skills of film language, know how to work collaboratively, and have the ability to create a film from conception, through development, shooting, and editing to a finished product.

We help students develop critical thinking skills, so they can analyze their work and the work of others and be able to interpret films through a variety of aesthetic, historical, and theoretical frameworks. Because the filmmaking center is located within a major research university, the filmmaking B.F.A. provides students access to vast intellectual resources and opportunities for cross-disciplinary learning.
