Incoming students at Mason Gross School of the Arts can pursue a bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) degree in design. Students opting for the B.F.A. in design will develop innovative and meaningful ways of communicating ideas in a wide range of concrete and dynamic media. They will acquire skills in form-making, systems thinking, publication design, coding, typography, interaction design, and data visualization while shaping content and form in real-world situations. The program encourages a critical engagement with contemporary culture while equipping students for a lifetime of practice as a designer in digital and/or print design. The curriculum prepares graduates to contribute to shaping the future direction of design. For design students, a capstone course will require students to shape a body of self-initiated work in their final year that becomes public, whether in the form of a website, book, an app, or another appropriate format.

Students wishing to pursue the B.F.A. in design apply to the B.F.A. in visual arts and declare the design major during their sophomore year, after completing a common cross-disciplinary foundation year. Transfer students declare at their transfer review.
