The Spanish major consists
of a minimum of 38 credits at the 200-400 level completed with a grade of C or
better in each course. At the 200 level, Spanish majors are required to take 940:215 and 940:261. At the 300 level, majors are required to take 940:325, 3 credits in literature (940:331, 940:332, 940:333, 940:334, 940:335, or 940:336), 3 credits in linguistics (940:362, 940:363, 940:364, 940:365, 940:366, or 940:367), and 1 oral proficiency credit (940:388 or 389). At the 400 level, majors are required to take two 3-credit courses and 1 oral proficiency credit (940:499). To complete the 38-credit minimum, students are required to take electives at the 200-400 level.
Please note: 1) no more than 15 credits may be taken at the 200 level; 2) only juniors and seniors may register for 940:388 or 389 and 940:499; 3) students may count up to 6 elective credits in Portuguese (810) at the 200-400 level toward the Spanish major; and 4) in some cases, up to 6 credits of courses taught in another discipline may count for the Spanish major if the courses are preapproved and corroborated by the undergraduate director. Students are responsible for consulting the catalog course listing for a description of prerequisites and special conditions prior to registration of classes. All major programs must be reviewed and approved by a departmental adviser.
Spanish Intensive Track
The Spanish Intensive Track allows
students to study both Spanish linguistics and Hispanic literature and culture
in depth. It is primarily intended for those who aim to pursue graduate studies
in Spanish or education.
Requirements of the Intensive Track:
The Spanish
Intensive Track consists of 52 credits at grade C or higher.
Either 01:940:388 (1) or 01:940:389 (1) is
required.
01:940:499 (1) and 01:940:325 (3) are both
required.
Of the remaining 47 credits:
at least 3 credits are required
from 01:940:331 and 01:940:332;
at least 3 credits are required
from 01:940:333 and 01:940:334;
at least 3 credits are required
from 01:940:335 and 01:940:336;
at least 6 credits are required from
01:940:362, 940:363, and 01:940:364;
at least 3 credits are required
from: 01:940:403, 404, 405, 406, 415, 423, 424, 425, 426, 434, 435, 437, 438, 440, 441, 443, 444, 447, 448, 449, 450, 451, 460, 461, 462, 465, 489, 490, 491, 492;
at least 3 credits are required
from 01:940:416, 417, 418, 419, 420, 421, 422, 488;
at least 3 further credits at the
400-level are required.
Of the remaining 23 credits:
Up to 12 credits may count for students
(who have not initially placed at a higher level) from 01:940:201, 202, 203, 204, 215, 217, 240, 261;
Up to 9 credits may count from
01:810:135, and any Portuguese (810) class at the 200-level or higher;
Up to 6 credits may count from
courses taught in a language other than Spanish or Portuguese if all written
work is done in Spanish, the topic of the course is relevant to the Spanish
major, and if the course is preapproved in writing by a departmental adviser.
The remaining credits toward a total of
52 must be completed in Spanish (940) courses at the 300-level or higher.
