01:810:101-102 Elementary Portuguese (4,4) Speaking, reading, and writing; oral, aural, and written exercises. Open only to those with no prior knowledge of Portuguese. Not open to speakers of Spanish.
01:810:130 Intermediate Portuguese (4) Study and practice of specific areas of grammar, linguistic structure, and style. Selected reading of modern authors, with composition and class discussion. Prerequisites: 01:810:101-102, placement exam, or permission of department. Not open to speakers of Spanish or native speakers of Portuguese.
01:810:135 Portuguese for Speakers of Spanish (4) Study of Portuguese as it contrasts to Spanish. Development of speaking and listening skills. Practice in specific areas of grammar, linguistic structure, and style. Prerequisite: Permission of department. Open only to speakers of Spanish with no prior knowledge of Portuguese. Not open to native speakers of Portuguese.
01:810:141-142 Accelerated Portuguese (4,4) Intensive study of Portuguese. Practice of specific areas of grammar, linguistic structure, style, and literary analysis. 01:810:201 Portuguese for Native Speakers (4) Study of specific areas of grammar and orthography. Development of reading skills and vocabulary building. Practice in oral communication, grammar application, and composition. Prerequisite: Placement exam or permission of department.
01:810:203 Portuguese Conversation and Composition (4) Development of oral fluency and writing skills in a variety of contexts. Conversation, vocabulary building, oral reports, and fundamentals of expository writing. Prerequisites: 01:810:130 or 135 or 141-142, and permission of department. Not open to native speakers of Portuguese.
01:810:309 Africa and Portugal: An Introduction (3) Discussion of significant historical, social, and cultural trends in Portugal and Lusophone Africa. Prerequisite: 01:810:201 or 203, or placement exam, or permission of department.

01:810:345 Realism in Portuguese Literature (3) Readings from the works of Eça de Queiroz, the generation of 1870, and the neorealists. Prerequisite: 01:810:201 or 203, or placement exam, or permission of department.
01:810:370 Portuguese Translation (3) Translation of a range of texts from Portuguese into English; discussion of language register. Prerequisite: 01:810:325, or placement, or permission of department.
01:810:417 History of the Portuguese Language (3) Development of Portuguese from its origins to the present. Settlement history and non-Roman influences in Portugal. Evolution of sounds, forms, sentence structures, and words. Dialectal variations. Prerequisite: One semester of 300-level Portuguese or permission of department. Course may be taught in English, but knowledge of Portuguese and/or Spanish is necessary.
01:810:420 The Brazilian Narrative (3) Development of the Brazilian novel and short story from the colonial period to the present. Emphasis on 19th and 20th centuries. Reading and analysis of representative works. Prerequisite: One semester of 300-level literature in Portuguese or permission of department.
01:810:430 Camões (3) Epic and lyric poetry of Camões and his contemporaries. Antecedents and repercussions of the Portuguese Renaissance. Prerequisite: One semester of 300-level literature in Portuguese or permission of department.
01:810:440 The Portuguese-Speaking World: Multiple Perspectives (3) Main traits of the civilization of the Portuguese-speaking world. Evolution of its social institutions and customs. Representative literary, philosophical, and artistic works. Prerequisite: One semester of 300-level literature in Portuguese or permission of department.
01:810:493,494 Independent Study (BA,BA) Independent readings under faculty supervision. Prerequisites: One semester of 300-level Portuguese and permission of department and instructor.
01:810:497,498 Honors in Portuguese (BA,BA) Research paper under faculty supervision. Prerequisites: Permission of department. Open only to seniors.
01:810:499 Readings in Portuguese (3) Independent readings under faculty supervision. Prerequisites: One semester of 400-level literature in Portuguese and permission of department and instructor. May not be taken more than once for credit.
