The interdisciplinary minor in Latin American studies is an excellent complement to a variety of disciplinary majors, including anthropology, geography, history, Latino studies, political science, Spanish and Portuguese, and others. The minor consists of 18 credits, of which 9 credits must be at the 300 level or above. Students must take the core course, Latin America: An Introduction (01:590:101). Required courses are: 3 credits in history (either Colonial Latin America, 01:508:260, or Modern Latin America, 01:508:262); 3 credits in social sciences (any one of the following: Anthropology of Latin America, 01:070:223; Geography of Latin America, 01:450:336; Change in Latin America, 01:790:312; and Latinos and Migration, 01:595:298); and 3 credits in Spanish-American or Brazilian literature and culture (any course with a Latin American focus in subject codes 940 or 810). Students must also take 6 credits of elective courses with a Latin American focus, 3 credits of which must be at the 300 level or above; electives may include courses listed above not selected as required courses. Minors must also satisfy the language proficiency requirement by completing either Spanish 215 (or above) OR Portuguese 201 or 203 (or above). Students are encouraged to take a placement exam at the language lab to determine their level of language ability. Course selections for the minor must be approved by the program director or an adviser.
