Majors will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of one East Asian language (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) and the literature and culture of one or more of these countries; and continue language study and/or be employed in a capacity requiring such linguistic skill and cultural knowledge. Majors will be able to communicate (at a proficient level of listening, speaking, and writing) in the language and to read vernacular materials appropriate to the student's level; achieve high-intermediate to advanced-low speaking, reading, and writing competency (based on the guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages [ACTFL]); demonstrate working knowledge of one of the East Asian languages as required for government service, industry, business, law, etc.; effectively use tools (reference works, etc.) and technology appropriate to learning an East Asian language; and analyze issues concerning East Asia and relate them to other areas in the humanities and social sciences following an interdisciplinary approach.
