Majors will be able to demonstrate substantial knowledge of Chinese language, literature, and culture and pursue advanced study and/or employment in a capacity requiring such linguistic skill and cultural knowledge. Majors will be able to communicate effectively (listening, speaking, and writing) in Standard Chinese (Mandarin) and to read vernacular materials appropriate to the student's area of specialization; achieve advanced-low or advanced speaking, reading, and writing competency (based on the guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages [ACTFL]); demonstrate practical skills in using Chinese for translation, interpretation, etc.; use effectively tools (reference works, etc.) and technology appropriate to learning Chinese; and analyze and interpret texts and relate relevant issues to other areas in the humanities.
