Solid GEMS is an academically intensive summer program that takes place prior to the student's second year in college. Building on the students' first-year experience, Solid GEMS aims to improve performance in entry-level science courses. Recognizing the challenges of the science course curriculum, one goal of the program is to discourage students from changing their science major due to their experience in the initial science course. The program aims to assist the student in establishing a sound academic foundation and experience, which encourages their continuation and success in their chosen science major.
Participants successfully completing the Solid GEMS summer program earn 4 graduation credits in the 01:160:161 General Chemistry (Solid GEMS) course. For students who are unable to participate in the summer programs, additional Solid GEMS sections of General Chemistry are offered during the fall and spring semesters. Program activities are designed to generate questions, curiosity, and a "feel for the subject."
This program is open and available to all students who qualify. For eligible students, the costs of attendance are financed by grants received by the Office of Special Programs. The program will determine eligibility at the time of application.
