Joachim Messing, Director

The Waksman Institute of Microbiology (WIM) is an internationally recognized center of excellence in molecular genetics. Fifteen laboratories, arranged around three groups (microbial, plant, and animal developmental genetics) and outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, provide graduate students the opportunity to learn the latest techniques in molecular genetics. In addition, WIM houses the Fermentation and Genomics Core Facilities to provide infrastructure to the larger research community. Research has enabled the members of the institute to push the frontiers of scientific knowledge to new levels from better nutrition to drug-resistance of infectious diseases, from cancer to birth defects.
