The required course 08:081:521,522 Visiting Artists/First-Year Review is offered for 4 credits in both the fall and spring semesters. This course combines presentations from artists and critics and individual student critiques by faculty committees. Visiting Artists features weekly presentations from artists and critics, who also conduct individual studio visits. Each first-year student is expected to sign up for at least two individual studio critiques with the visiting artists. Faculty critiques individual student's work at the end of first and second semesters. In the fall each student presents a one-page artist statement during review of work at the first-year group exhibition, while the spring semester review is a critique of work in each student's studio. Passing both reviews is a prerequisite for continuing in the program and failure to pass a review may lead to a student's dismissal and withdrawal of a teaching appointment.
