The graduate curriculum in visual arts is a full-time program with no midyear admissions. Admission to the master of fine arts (M.F.A.) program is based on four criteria:
1. An official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended.
2. Three letters of recommendation.
3. A personal statement of 300-500 words about the applicant's academic and career objectives and his or her creative focus.
All of the above are required for the online application available at http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu or at http://www.masongross.rutgers.edu/admissions/graduate.
4. A portfolio consisting of 10-20 images of most recent work via Slide Room.
The last item, the portfolio, is extremely important. Each image should be captioned with title, year, medium, size, and description. Applicants in time-based video, film, or performance may submit a video no more than 10 minutes in length. Presentations must be under 60 MBs. For more information, visit http://www.masongross.rutgers.edu/admissions/auditions-and-portfolio-reviews/visual-arts-portfolio-requirements#online. Technical support is available at support@slideroom.com.
Typically five business days after submitting the university application, applicants will receive an email invitation to complete the Mason Gross School of the Arts supplemental application and receive instructions on how to submit the portfolio.
Along with the portfolio, the same statement and three recommendation letters that are part of the graduate application are also submitted in slide room.
Applicants are required to submit all their credentials and portfolio by the deadline date of February 1. Applications are reviewed by the graduate faculty.
