Program Description: The Ed.M. program in Language Education with ESL certification is designed for individuals who possess a permanent New jersey Standard Instructional Certificate or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) in a content field or elementary education and who wish to become certified to teach English as a Second Language.

The Ed.M. program in language education is designed to extend and diversify the professional preparation of certified teachers who seek to enhance their instructional skills and knowledge in English as a second language education. The goal of the program is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the nature of language, the process of second language acquisition, the relationship between language and culture, and successful models of second language instructional strategies.

The program requires a minimum of 30 credits of study (no transfer credits permitted) beyond the baccalaureate degree. It provides for study in the area of linguistics, language pedagogy, and the cultural context of language education, as well as the opportunity to select courses in elective areas. At the end of the coursework, students must pass a comprehensive examination.

Major Requirements

Every candidate for certification in English as a Second Language education must complete a full major in a foreign language, English, or applied linguistics.

Language and Cultural Proficiency Requirements

Proficiency in the target language is to be demonstrated through an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) in the target language administered by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). All students seeking certification in ESL are required to pass an Oral Proficiency Interview and a Written Proficiency Test (WPT) in English administered by ACTFL. To arrange the OPI visit: http://www.languagetesting.com. Call 914-963-7110 to schedule the WPT. OPI and WPT results must be on file with the Office of Student and Academic Services prior to student teaching.
