Program Description: The Ed.M. program with (k-6) teacher certification in elementary education is designed for individuals who possess a bachelor's degree and who wish to pursue certification and a master's degree in education at the same time. Certificates are recommended only in conjunction with the completion of the requirements for the Ed.M. degree.
The program has four major goals:
- To foster a vision of learning as an active process in which students construct their own knowledge and understandings
- To foster a vision of teaching that promotes depth of understanding and problem solving rather than mere curriculum coverage and that recognizes children's individual and cultural differences
- To prepare teachers who are knowledgeable about current research in learning, teaching, and child development so they can make informed decisions about educational practice and help to bring about change in schools
- To prepare prospective teachers to be teacher-researchers who reflect on their own practice

Major Requirements
Almost any major offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences is acceptable for this program. A major in one of the subject areas taught in the middle school grades (English, mathematics, sciences, social studies), however, will make the program requirements much easier to accomplish. Please check with the program faculty about your choice of major as early as possible in your undergraduate career.
Subject Specialization (15 credits)
At least 15 credits of college-level work must be completed in the subject field that will be the specialization. Any subject fitting into one of the following four areas is appropriate: English/language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies. Middle school specialization in more than one field (i.e., math and social studies) is possible in New Jersey; however, the Graduate School of Education is only able to recommend students for one middle school specialization. Upon completion of the program, students may apply to the state for additional certifications if they have the appropriate coursework.
