James Walkup

Ph.D., New School for Social Research

James Walkup has postdoctoral clinical training in inpatient psychiatry and research training in the organization and financing of care for people with severe mental illness. His clinical interests include schizophrenia, bipolar illness, recurrent depression, and severe personality disorder. In his research, he is particularly concerned with non-psychiatric needs of people with psychiatric symptoms, such as health care, work opportunities, family ties, friendships, and participation in communities. Dr. Walkup's current research projects focus on the stigma associated with mental illness, and the provision of care for people with mental illness and HIV. In July 2008, his term ended as head of the NIH study section concerned with behavioral science, prevention, and HIV.
