A student must have a grade-point average in English of 3.3 or better to pursue independent study and may enroll in only one independent study course per semester. The student should discuss the contemplated project with, and secure the approval of, the instructor under whom the student wishes to work. The instructor, as sponsor, then submits a proposal to the curriculum committee for approval. All proposals must be received by the committee before the beginning of the semester. Normally the department does not permit independent study in areas in which courses are regularly offered. An English major who wishes to earn credit for experience in a volunteer or professional setting has two options: the internship course sponsored by the Center for Career Planning and Placement (50:090:399), which provides elective credit in general education, or the internship offered by the Department of English (50:350:497,498), which provides elective credit in English. The latter requires a faculty adviser in the Department of English, who will supervise the internship in consultation with an on-site supervisor and assign a grade. The process for approval of the internship in English is the same for independent study. The internship in English is normally limited to English majors.
