Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Health Competencies - Social and Behavioral Health Sciences

Each concentration identifies competencies for each degree offered. These competencies reflect the full range of knowledge, skills, and other attributes that a student will acquire as a result of completing the requirements for a particular degree.

Upon graduation, a student completing the Ph.D. in public health - social and behavioral health sciences curriculum will be able to:

  • design and conduct research investigations related to health behavior;
  • apply univariate and multivariable analytic techniques to understand health behaviors;
  • demonstrate ability to critically analyze and interpret the scientific literature;
  • develop grant writing skills to establish a program of funded research;
  • demonstrate proficiency in individual or organizational models of behavior change; and
  • construct conceptual or empirical models describing the behavior of individuals or households regarding their health status.
