Youth Literature Online Certificate Program

The Youth Literature Online Certificate Program is a postdegree, advanced study of youth literature designed to help librarians, teachers, and other youth services professionals pass on a rich literary heritage to children and young adults in a technological age.

The certificate program is designed to develop increased expertise among people who already have some education and experience in youth literature, rather than to introduce new professionals to the field. Basic course work in youth literature is a prerequisite for entering the program. Admission requires a master's degree in librarianship, education, or a related field, including course work in youth literature, as well as some work experience. If you have a bachelor's degree but significant work experience and have taken course work in youth literature, you may request an exception to the admissions requirements.

The courses for this program are offered entirely online. Students must have a basic knowledge of Internet use and regular access to their own Internet account. You may apply to join the certificate program during any term.

Courses may be taken without pursuing a certificate. To earn a certificate, students must complete 15 credits (five courses) over a three-year period.  A total of 14 courses are offered in this program in a three-year rotation from which to choose:

  • The Art of the Picture Book
  • Children's Literature Goes to the Movies
  • Does the Shoe Fit? Fairy Tales as Literature for Children
  • The Fact of the Matter: Informational Literature for Middle and High School
  • Fantasy and Speculative Fiction
  • Female Voices in Historical Narratives
  • Gender and Culture in Children's Picture Books
  • Information Seeking and Using: Understanding How Young People Use Electronic Information
  • Man of Advantage: Books and Boys in the Middle and High School Years

  • In Search of Cupid and Psyche: Myth and Legend in Children's Literature
