All M.C.I.S. students are required to take 6 credits of experiential learning. In these supervised experiences, students will engage with practitioners to learn skills and perspectives. Grades are assigned based on a self-evaluation by the student and a supervisor-evaluation by the practitioner or faculty member. Online students may complete this requirement in an online opportunity or in their local area. Students may satisfy this requirement through a combination of the following options:
- Internships (150 hours for 3 credits, or 300 hours for 6 credits) in businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and/or Rutgers units/departments. Students may not intern where they are employed.
- Practicum--students work with faculty in executing cutting-edge research projects.
- Teaching Interns--students work as assistants to a professor in a course related to their study.
- Fellowship--students apply and are selected as Fellows in the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Fellowship program. Six of the credits earned in this program may be applied to degree requirements. Fellows have tuition paid and receive a stipend. They spend 20 hours per week on site at J&J.
Students may count 9 credits of experiential learning toward the degree, with the last 3 credits taking the place of one elective course.
