Core Courses (12 credits)


The following five courses (15 credits) are required of all degree candidates:

(1) Communication and Society--with specialized sections for each track:

  • 17:194:510  Communication and Society (general and strategic organizational communication tracks)
  • 17:194:509  Digital Media and Innovation (digital media track)
  • 17:610:560  Health Communication (health communication track)

(2) 17:194:511  Organizational Communication

(3) 17:194:512  Mediated Communication  OR 17:194:517  Media Studies: Theory and Practice

(4) 17:194:514  Communication Research--focuses on literacy in reading original research

(5) 17:194:519  M.C.I.S. Capstone Seminar OR 17:194:508  ePortfolio
Capstone is a 3-credit, faculty-supervised project completed by all M.C.I.S. students in or near the last semester of study. It requires students to integrate what they have learned in the M.C.I.S. program through the completion of a clearly focused case study, literature review, or empirical project. The projects can be of an applied or scholarly nature. ePortfolio is a 3-credit online course in which students in or near the last semester of study create online portfolios based on their learning in the program that will facilitate their professional growth. All projects are informed by literature and scholarly knowledge gained through the program.
