M.B.A. Advanced Standing

Qualifying for Advanced Standing/Transfer Credits

The master of business administration (M.B.A.) degree normally requires a minimum of 60 credits. However, students may receive advanced standing for prior academic work or through challenge exams. To be considered for advanced standing, students must submit a written request, including course descriptions, within the first two semesters of enrollment. Courses submitted for evaluation must be a grade of B or higher and cannot exceed five years from the time of initial enrollment. A student may receive a maximum of 11 credits of advanced standing (9 credits towards the core and 2 credits towards the foundation). Advanced standing includes the total of graduate transfer credits (AACSB accredited M.B.A. programs and non-conferred degrees), challenge exams, undergraduate course recognition credits, and CPA licensing credits; no credits are awarded for Ph.D. All students are required to complete a minimum of 49 credits in residence at Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick (RBS).

Transfer of MBA Credits

Students may receive up to a maximum of 11 credits of graduate coursework completed with a B or better if they received such credit as an M.B.A degree candidate (and did not complete the degree) at an AACSB accredited institution. Please note: no advanced credit can be awarded for any course taken more than five years before the time of initial enrollment to the M.B.A program.

To apply for credit, please complete the Transfer Credit Form.

Undergraduate Business Courses

Business Majors: A student may receive 2 credits for every 3 credits of undergraduate upper-division coursework completed with a B or better in business core areas of study (a) at an AACSB accredited institution, or (b) such other courses as economics, information technology, and advanced statistics completed at an AACSB accredited institution.

Arts & Sciences Majors: A student may receive 2 credits for a 3-credit elective undergraduate upper-division course that is comparable to an RBS core course in economics, information technology, and advanced statistics, if he or she completed the course with a B or better at an accredited institution.

Please note: no advanced credit can be awarded for any course taken more than five years before the time of enrollment in the M.B.A. program.

To apply for credit, please complete the Petition for MBA Advanced Standing.

CPA License

A student who is a CPA may receive 3 credits for the core accounting course. To receive credit, please fax a copy of your CPA license to the Office of Graduate Student Services at 973-353-1057 (Newark) and 732-445-5817 (New Brunswick). Include your RBS student ID number at the top of the license.
