Instruction in
engineering began at Rutgers in 1864 when New Jersey designated Rutgers
College to be the State College for the Benefit of Agriculture and
Mechanic Arts. The College of Engineering became a separate unit in
1914 and was renamed the School of Engineering in 1999. The school is
dedicated to the sound technical and general education of the student.
It offers a bachelor of science degree in seven disciplines as well as
a curriculum in applied sciences. Its graduate programs are conducted
through the Graduate School-New Brunswick.
