Golden Key. Golden Key is an international honor society founded in 1977 at Georgia State University to recognize academic achievement among undergraduate and graduate students at the collegiate level. The mission of the Golden Key Honor Society is to enable students to realize their potential through the advancement of academics, leadership, and services. On April 26, 1999, the Rutgers University-Newark chapter of Golden Key was chartered and honored students who achieved a GPA of a 3.5 or higher and were within the top 15 percent of their academic class.
Omicron Delta Epsilon. Omicron Delta Epsilon is the International Honor Society for Economics, founded at Harvard and the University of Wisconsin in 1915. The Rutgers University-Newark chapter was chartered in 1966. It is the sixth-oldest chapter in the state of New Jersey and the oldest of the three chapters at Rutgers University.
Phi Alpha. Phi Alpha is a national Social Work Honor Society that was founded in 1960 at Michigan State University to honor the academic excellence of undergraduate students pursuing the social work major. The purpose of Phi Alpha Honor Society is to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideas. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. The Nu Mu Xi chapter was founded at Rutgers University-Newark in 2019 and its members represent students in the top 35 percent of the social work major.
Phi Alpha Theta. Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) is a national honorary society for history, and has long had a chapter at Rutgers University-Newark. PAT is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.
Phi Beta Kappa. Phi Beta Kappa, founded by William & Mary College students in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1776, is the oldest and most prestigious honorary society in America. The Rutgers College Chapter is the Alpha Chapter in the state of New Jersey. In 1958, the National Council authorized the establishment of the Rutgers University-Newark college section of the Alpha Chapter. Its members are elected on the basis of a distinguished scholastic record in a curriculum that displays breadth and depth in the liberal arts at the College of Arts and Sciences and University College.
Pi Sigma Alpha. Pi Sigma Alpha is the National Political Science Honors Society; it is the only U.S.-based political science honors society for college and university students. Its purpose is to recognize and promote high academic achievement in the field of political science.
Psi Chi. Psi Chi is the international honor society of psychology, designed to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology. Psi Chi was founded in 1929 with a mission to encourage excellence in scholarship and advance the science of psychology. The Rutgers University-Newark Chapter of Psi Chi requires that students achieve a 3.5 GPA within psychology and be within the top 35 percent of their academic class. Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science.
Sigma Delta Pi. Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society (La Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica), was established on Nov. 14, 1919, at the University of California-Berkeley. A student majoring or minoring in Spanish with at least a minimum average of 3.5 and a 3.2 cumulative average may be eligible for election to Chi Epsilon #532, the Newark Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi. Chi Epsilon #532 was established at Rutgers in 2005-06.
Tau Sigma. Tau Sigma National Transfer Honor Society is an academic honor society designed specifically to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students. The Rutgers University-Newark chapter was chartered and founded in 2011 to honor transfer students who transferred into the Newark College of Arts and Sciences, University College-Newark, the Rutgers School of Business-Newark, the School of Criminal Justice, and the School of Public Affairs and Administration and achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher after the completion of their first semester at Rutgers University-Newark.
