About the Honors College

The Honors College at Rutgers University-Newark seeks to be a supportive community and intellectual home for ambitious students on our dynamic downtown campus in Newark, New Jersey.

With an interdisciplinary curriculum grounded in the liberal arts, the Honors College offers students the opportunity to build lasting relationships with professors and peers through smaller class sizes, personalized advising and mentoring opportunities, and rigorous undergraduate research. Recruited from among our very best classroom teachers, Honors College faculty members are committed to the mission of the program to instill lifetime learning skills in our students; they teach colloquia, specialized honors seminars, and mentor honors senior projects that are presented at a sponsored annual spring research fair.

Honors College students in the sciences, humanities, social sciences, and the university's preprofessional programs all receive support to help them succeed in their future careers. The Honors College office also offers guidance to students seeking to be candidates for national fellowships.

Honors College graduates are leaders in the public and private sectors, having been trained to cultivate their communication and critical thinking skills by volunteering and leading organizations both on and off campus. As part of the Honors College's requirements, all students engage in service projects and internships.

As members of the Honors College, students are granted special access to the Honors College's Esterly Lounge on the second floor of our headquarters in Engelhard Hall. With comfortable seating and tables, the wi-fi enabled space is a place where students can work or rest as members of a community.

Students are invited to join the Honors College based on a holistic review of their academic and nonacademic record. In some instances, an interview with a member of the staff may be required. Incoming first-year students, as well as continuing and transfer students, are all considered for Honors College invitations. Those interested in applying to join the Honors College should contact the office or website to complete an application for consideration.
