Courses

21:086:201,202 Introduction to Media Studies I,II (3,3) Introductory seminar exploring the historical and philosophical development of journalism and media operations in the United States, as well as analysis and evaluation of the functions, practices, policies, and responsibilities of media institutions in the dissemination of information to the public. Prerequisite: 21:355:102.
21:086:337 Basic Reporting and Newswriting (3) Basic news gathering techniques used at newspapers, magazines, and television and radio stations; fieldwork; stories are written at computers under newsroom conditions. Prerequisite: 21:355:102.
21:086:338 Advanced Reporting (3) Builds on Basic Reporting and Newswriting with an emphasis on advanced writing and research techniques, as well as producing video news stories. Prerequisite: 21:086:337.
21:086:340 Introduction to Multimedia (3) Covers all of the latest methods of news gathering, including audio, video, photo, and graphics training. Prerequisite: 21:355:102.
21:086:342 Special Topics in Journalism (3) Addresses specific special topic in journalism. May vary each time course is offered. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing; 21:086:201 and 337.
21:086:344 Journalism, Ethics, and the Law (3) Examines how journalists do their work from the perspective of legal and ethical parameters. Prerequisite: 21:086:201 or 202.
21:086:346 Independent Study in Journalism and Media Studies (3) A special journalism project for qualified students, conducted with a member of the faculty. Prerequisites: 21:086:201 and 337.
21:086:348 Sports Reporting (3) How to cover a sports beat.
21:086:386 Televisiion Newswriting (3) How to write and report for television news broadcasts.
21:086:387 Radio Newswriting (3) Radio writing and broadcasting.
21:086:391 Writing for Publication (3) Advanced feature and article writing; students function as editorial board, discussing ideas for news features and magazine articles, and offering constructive criticism to each member-writer; students must produce a newspaper feature and a magazine article; the process is from query letter to finished feature and article. Prerequisites: 21:355:102; 21:086:201 and 337.
21:086:400 Journalism Capstone (3) Follows an introduction to multimedia in 21:086:342 with an emphasis on creating video news stories and short documentaries. Prerequisite: 21:086:342.
21:086:440 Creating News Video for the Web (3) This class is about telling stories with simple video techniques and sharing information. Students will explore effective storytelling using video made with the new-generation mobile phones or video cameras in concert with the written word. These techniques are in use every day on major news websites. The class will be conducted as though students are working in a professional newsroom where meeting deadlines is critical. Professional standards will be used to judge projects and all work must be publishable on a professional news website.
21:086:455 Journalism Masters (3) Narrative storytelling. Reporting and writing long-form journalism for traditional and nontraditional media.
21:086:459,460 Journalism Internship (3,3) For those who have demonstrated superior skill in their field; work at least one day a week at a newspaper, magazine, broadcasting station, or public relations firm. Evaluation by staff executives of the participating organization. Open only to advanced students.
21:086:493,494 Newsroom Workshop (3,3) Seminar for advanced students on a semester project; professional-level performance in newspapers and broadcast organizations. Prerequisites: 21:086:201, 337, 338, or permission of program coordinator.
