Students Below a 2.5 Cumulative GPA
Students enrolled at Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-Newark (RBS) are expected to maintain the highest level of academic performance. Students who fall below a 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in any given semester will be placed on academic probation or may be subject to academic dismissal.
The purpose of academic probation is to alert the student and the institution to problems associated with the student's academic performance and to recommend or implement strategies for improvement:
- Students with a cumulative GPA of 2.49-2.00 will be placed on academic probation.
- Students placed on academic probation will be limited to a maximum of 14 credits per semester, and are required to have adviser approval of all courses during the duration of their probation.
- Students on academic probation will be able to continue taking RBS courses with adviser approval.
- Students placed on academic probation will not have access to the online web registration system (WEBREG) and must make an appointment with their academic adviser in order to register for courses.
- Students placed on academic probation are expected to make satisfactory progress toward graduation and continue matriculation in RBS.
- Students who must interrupt their studies may, with the approval of the associate dean, RBS, request a leave of absence for a maximum of two semesters (consecutive or intermittent).
- Students placed on academic probation, and who are out of the program for more than two semesters, may be dismissed from RBS.
First Semester (First-Year and Transfer) Students Below a 2.0 Cumulative GPA
First-year and transfer students with a cumulative GPA below 2.0 will not be immediately dismissed after their first semester:
- These students will be allowed to continue their registration at RBS for one semester; they must repeat all courses with grades of a D or an F within this time period.
- Additionally, they are not allowed to enroll in any new business courses during this semester.
- During this same time frame, these students are encouraged to either apply for a school-to-school transfer to another unit of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, or to transfer to another college/university.
- If the student does not attain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA at the end of the second semester, she or he will be dismissed from RBS and from Rutgers University unless she or he has been admitted into another academic unit (Newark College of Arts and Sciences, School of Public Affairs and Administration, School of Criminal Justice) or college (Rutgers University-New Brunswick or Rutgers University-Camden) within the university system.
Dismissal
Any one of the following conditions will result in automatic dismissal from RBS and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, at the end of the second semester are later:

Cumulative grade point average lower than 2.00 at end of second semester or later

Three grades of D (1.00) or F (0.00) received in eligibility courses

Two grades of D (1.00) or F (0.00) received in the same eligibility course

Three grades of D (1.00) or F (0.00) received in business courses

Two grades of D (1.00) or F (0.00) received in the same business course
Students dismissed from the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-Newark have been dismissed from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and may not continue to study at the university unless readmitted to another academic unit of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Students dismissed from the RBS may petition the Academic Standing Committee for reconsideration of the dismissal, if there are extenuating circumstances that account for their poor academic performance. This must be done in writing by the date indicated in their letter of dismissal.
While the acceptance of an appeal is not guaranteed, if the student's appeal is accepted, the student will be readmitted and placed on continued probation for the following semester of enrollment. A note of academic dismissal will remain in the student's academic file.
The appeal must be written by the student and should be comprehensive: elaborating on nonacademic problems, such as financial, medical, and personal hardships that affected his or her performance during the semester. Presenting false or intentionally misleading information in the appeal may result in immediate dismissal of the appeal and/or judicial charges.
The appeal should be no more than four pages and must be received before the deadline date outlined in the letter of dismissal.
The letter of appeal must include:
- Student's name, RUID number, current address, and Rutgers email address
- Circumstances that negatively affected the student's academic performance during the semester of the dismissal
- What was done to address these issues, or what is being done if these circumstances are still ongoing
- Any administrative contact made with RBS, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, or any outside office(s) to address these issues, and the outcome of these efforts
- Appropriate supporting documentation
- Outline of an academic and personal action plan that will be implemented if reinstated to RBS
All appeals and supporting documentation must be submitted via an official Rutgers email account to: asappeals_ugnwk@business.rutgers.edu. Students submitting appeals via non-Rutgers accounts and/or hand-delivering appeals will not have their appeal reviewed by the Academic Standing Committee.
The Academic Standing Committee is charged with interpreting and applying the criteria for dismissal in the cases of individual students; the committee constitutes the final authority in these matters.
An error of omission on the part of RBS is not sufficient grounds for readmitting a student on appeal if academic progress towards the degree has not been made.
