School Nurse Certificate Program


The school nurse certificate program is for a baccalaureate-prepared school nurse to obtain certification in the state of New Jersey.


Program Requirement

Current license as a registered professional nurse in New Jersey and baccalaureate degree from an accredited or approved institution.


General Education (45 credits)

Forty-five credits in the general education area including at least four of the following:

English
Mathematics

Social Sciences

Natural Sciences

Humanities (foreign language, fine and practical arts, philosophy)


Foundation Courses (14 credits)

Equivalent courses earned while obtaining licensure as a registered professional nurse with a B.S./B.A. or B.S.N. degree can be applied to these course requirements:


25:705:202 Cultural Dimensions of Humans and Their Environment, or a cultural studies course


25:705:229 Life Span: A Holistic Approach (3)


25:705:306 Health Assessment Across the Life Span (3)


25:705:444 Community Health Nursing (4)


Core Courses (18 credits)


05:300:306 Educational Psychology/Principles of Classroom Teaching (3)


25:705:470 Teaching Process in Health Education (3)


25:705:480 School Health Nursing (6)


25:705:481 School Health Nursing Practicum (6)



A minimum of 12 credits must be taken at Rutgers College of Nursing to obtain this certificate; otherwise there is no limit on transferred credits for certification purposes.


Student Teaching

Student teaching will take place in 25:705:481 School Health Nursing Practicum. The practicum will consist of 150 hours that can be done in one or two semesters.
