Placement Examinations for Entering Students

Placement tests are administered to incoming students admitted to the Newark College of Arts and Sciences to evaluate their proficiency in mathematics and English composition prior to course enrollment. Exemptions from placement testing occur only in the following cases:

  • Incoming students who have earned advanced placement credit in English, incoming first-year students (only) with verbal SAT scores of 550 or higher, transfer students who score at or above the 50th percentile on the CLEP English examinations, and all students admitted to the Honors College are exempt from placement testing in writing.
  • Incoming students who have earned advanced placement credit in mathematics are exempt from placement testing in mathematics.

In addition, transfer students who have completed at least one college-level mathematics course at or above the level of college algebra may be exempt from placement testing in mathematics, and those who have completed at least one college-level composition course may be exempt from placement testing in writing. All other entering students must take a placement test in mathematics and writing before they may register for courses.

Note that exemptions for students earning advanced placement credit are granted only after official reports from the testing organizations have been received by Rutgers and evaluated for credit. Those wishing to register before the official reports are sent will have their placements adjusted once the reports are received and evaluated.

Additional information on placement tests, including directions for test date registration, may be found at http://www.rutgers-newark.rutgers.edu/dsanwk. Students residing more than 200 miles from campus may be eligible for off-site placement testing. Please contact the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs for information about off-site placement testing.
