Writing courses at Rutgers-Newark are designed to give students instruction, guidance, and experience in the writing that will be asked of them throughout their college careers. That writing is largely based on academic reading. All Rutgers-Newark writing courses engage students in the difficult and important work of writing accurately, analytically, and argumentatively about readings (please see more on first-year students' writing requirements in the general education section of this catalog).
