Teacher certification is offered at Newark College of Arts and Sciences.
The Department of Urban Education is committed to preparing students to teach in urban elementary and secondary schools. Student teaching takes place in urban schools. Thirty-six credits are required to complete the program. All students must major in a liberal arts subject.
Secondary certification students major in the discipline they plan to teach. Psychology and sociology majors are accepted for elementary certification, but the department recommends a major in a core curriculum subject area. Certification is offered in: elementary education (5-8); elementary with specialization (6-8) in language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, speech arts and dramatics, English, biological sciences, earth science, physical science, chemistry, physics, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and technology education.
Middle school specialization (grades 5-8) requires a course in adolescent psychology. Please see the Psychology chapter of the catalog.
